Chicken Biryani

In many parts of the world, chicken biryani is a popular rice dish with a lot of flavors. Rice, chicken and a variety of spices are typically the main components. Before the rice is cooked, the chicken is typically marinated in a yogurt and spice mixture. Fried onions, nuts, and raisins are common additions to the dish's garnish. Biryani is a great option for a delicious and filling meal because it usually comes with raita, a yogurt-based sauce.

In South Asian cuisine, especially in India and Pakistan, chicken biryani is a common dish. Spices, chicken, and vegetables are all included in this rice-based dish. There are many different kinds of biryani, and the ingredients and ways to cook them can change depending on where you live and what you like. Biryani is typically made by layering cooked rice with chicken or another protein that has been marinated, sometimes vegetables, and baking or simmering the dish until the flavors are well-combined. Fried onions, nuts, and herbs are frequently used as garnishes, and it is typically served with raita, a yogurt-based condiment, as a side.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped up

Instructions:

1. In a fine-mesh sieve, rinse the rice until the water runs clear. In a medium saucepan, bring the water, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, and a pinch of salt to a boil. Add the rice and stir once. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender about 18 minutes. Remove from the heat and let sit, covered, for 10 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and set aside.

 2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until it is softened about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more.

 3. Add the chicken, cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, and salt to the skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chicken is cooked through.

 4. Add the chicken broth, peas, and half of the cilantro to the skillet. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.

 5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

 6. Spread half of the cooked rice in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with the chicken mixture then spread the remaining rice on top. Cover the dish with foil.

 7. Bake the biryani for 15 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Sprinkle the remaining cilantro on top before serving.
